Good question, Kathryn. What immediately sprung to mind would be: trial by jury of cultural peers. But I doubt it, because it could be argued that subcultures deserve recognition, too, but the subculture's values may be opposed to the main culture's on very specific points which would be what the trial was about. For example, if someone was raised among the Mah-Kee (I'm sure someone will correct my spelling). if you went by culture, their 'terrorist' acts would not be punisihed. So, the Federation tolerates cultural practices (the Vulcan duels during PonFarr) that don't invovle outsiders? Or do they simply choose whom to oppress and whom to tolerate based on a tyranny of the majority? *sigh* Did anyone else watch the first episode of Voyager and think that we were going to find out eventually that Paris was an idealist or was in prison because he'd been framed? That with the Mah-Kee around we'd get a refreshing new look at the politics and ideals of the time? Maybe learn what the core values are? I think I watched seven episodes of that series before deciding it was going nowhere. --Avona ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Nov 1999 12:23:26 -0700 From: Helen Krummenacker To: blakes7@lysator.liu.se Subject: [B7L] Kai on Cally Message-ID: <382DBAAF.57D9@jps.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > > And now I've rambled long enough. > > Kai Karmanheimo Kai, if that's rambling, I would be awestruck at your idea of a cohesive, reasoned statement. That post was terrfic, and I do enjoy hearing people analyse the less popular crew members. But then I packed in DS9 after the first 4 tapes as well, first time round. I gather enjoyment of 'Voyager' is *entirely* dependent of aesthetic appreciation of Seven of Nine. I think it's 'Maquis', BTW, but I could be wrong. Una ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Nov 1999 19:37:56 -0000 From: "Una McCormack" To: "b7" Subject: Re: [B7L] Re: Why Dystopia? Hey, *I* don't like her just for her looks! Yes, she looks good (although I think Cally and Jenna looked better), but I also think she's a great character. The problem is that they wrote entire episodes around her with the rest of the crew acting pretty much as wallpaper. And since she's no Avon, she can't carry it off. Oh, well, it's better than having strong characters put on teleport duty or taken over by aliens all the time. I always liked the character of Janeway, and the actress who plays her, but I'm usually in a very small group of one, whenever I mention this.
