Message-Id: <199804240436.EAA10584@rock103.genie.net> Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Hmm-- I think that my own working definition of "(B7, or whatever) fan" is "someone who participates in some aspect of organized (B7, or whatever) fandom, or would like to if only they knew about it." Then I'd make a further rough division into passive vs. active fans. A passive fan is someone who lurks on a mailing list, or buys the occasional zine, or goes to conventions sometimes-- but who doesn't post, or write stories or letters, or get involved in running conventions, or whatever. Active fans are the ones who are interested enough actually to do something; what someone called "super-fans" would be at the high end of that. B7 is the only fandom I've ever been active in. I think it happened because, more or less by chance, I got hooked on the show itself and met people who were already in the fandom at the same time. So far I've only ever had one real fannish passion at a time; I'm a fannish serial monogamist. I do retain a certain fondness for old loves, though. Working backwards, chronologically, they are: -- "From Eroica with Love" (a truly wonderful Japanese comic; however, I'm only mildly interested in manga in general, or in English-speaking Eroica fandom, which I discovered only after I'd gone over to B7) -- Hong Kong movies (especially the ones directed by Chang Cheh between about 1968 and 1973; I'm not familiar with the more recent ones) -- Star Trek, the original (now here, I was a passive fan; I subscribed to several classic zines and went to some of the original conventions) -- The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (my passionate interest in this, at the time it was first shown, preceded organized media fandom, which started with Trek) And for me there is a definite quasi-sexual element in all of the above. That is, all of the named products have one or more appealing male characters for me to lust after and have lurid fantasies about. (Avon is absolutely the best ever for my particular kinky purposes.) Oh-- and I am also a literary SF fan of the passive sort. And I like B5, but more in the way that I enjoy reading SF, rather than in the happily crazed sort of way I associate with my media crushes. Did your interest wane during that time, >reviving when the videos came out or when Satelite/cable starting airing >the episodes? I was distracted during the mid 80s by a rather particularly miserable and doomish event-type teenage experience, so didn't really do much in the way of fandom, or indeed anything. When I got to 6th form (1988), McCoy had just become the Doctor, so I started watching that again; and then found that another guy at 6th form was also a fan. He lent me his copies of TV Zone, inside of which I saw an advert for the Sheffield Space Centre, which I rang and asked for anything they had to do with Blake's 7. They sent me 'Avon: A Terrible Novel' (which I *adored* I was so B7 starved!!) and some very old Horizon newletters. I tried one of the phone numbers on the off-chance and was amazed to find that not only did I get through to the right person, but the club was still running! Round about this time the 4 edited tapes were released again in the UK, and I bought them. It was the first time I had seen any of the first season and it was just *wonderful*. I had never seen any of 'The Way Back' or 'Space Fall' before. Then my brother gave me his B7 collection, and I had all this stuff to read and - bless him - watch, since he had taped episodes in 1980/81 and kept them. Spent a couple of years in Horizon - there was a particularly active local group near where I lived - then went to Uni and went to a few London meetings. Got a bit distracted by studying and having little money to spend on stuff, but still managed to infect Louise and hence Tom (DOH!! Admission of guilt!!) on the way through Uni. Didn't manage to get a full set of tapes until I met Matthew and we merged collections!! Wasn't involved for a year or so: house moves, new jobs, etc... When I started my part-time degree I suddenly felt the urge to think about B7 again, and wrote 'A Little Knowledge'. Surfed the Internet and found 'The Aquitar Files ' - wow!!! - and Pita put me onto Lysator and Space City. So despite the occasional intrusion of real life, I have been thinking about B7 on-and-off since I saw the repeat of 'Aftermath' in 1980. I don't even regret not watching the first 2 seasons in 1978/9, because then I wouldn't have had the thrill of seeing them after waiting for so long. Still, who would have thought that all those playground games with my best friend when I was 8 were just the very start of a lengthy impact on my imagination and creativity?!? My entire family think I'm crackers, of course. Except my brother, who understands *completely*!! Here endeth the lesson!! Meanwhile Una asked: "B7 fandom- - your experience of it?" Pretty friendly on the whole, but a very mixed bunch. As to myself, it's rather strange at the moment having taken the step from being a bit of a passive fan (just going to conventions and collecting things) to an active one in helping organise a convention, which I have to admit is pretty scary, hard work and fun at the same time. I am though looking forward to the first convention I go to after Redemption when I can enjoy it without worrying about how many memberships we've taken, have we got enough flyers and have my posters upset anybody. I'm also not only a B7 fan, though B7 is my most active fandom. I go to literature conventions, such as Eastercon, as well as other show specific ones (I was at the one-day Dr Who convention Perfect Day last week). Anyone who has been to my flat will confirm that I also collect things. I'm surrounded by piles of videos and books, almost every inch of the wall is covered with some poster or other, and there are bits of memorabilia all over the place. Using your words: " I was exactly at the same point where our interested university student is - poised on the edge of cyberspace with a piqued interest but very little fanish knowledge to back it up." If you had as you say "very little fannish knowledge" would you now go ahead and write a university thesis, which will form a part of your degree?? Christopher is. In any case, fan of Blakes 7 or not, WHY use a 20 year old programme that was not particularly critically acclaimed at the time, and was ridiculed for its wobbly sets, panned for its overacting, and laughed at for its scripts? What is the point of contacting script writers and asking them about a programme that they wrote 1 or 2 episodes for 2 decades ago- they are not going to remember in any detail (unlike us *true* fans who can recite the entire script of Aftermath - sorry, I >really< had to get that dig in somewhere!!). Why not chose a current/recent TV series that *is* critically acclaimed, and that scriptwriters will remember writing for. At least that way the people who will be grading Christopher`s work will have some idea as to what he is talking about. Had he said something along the lines of "I`m a fan of B7, and having just recently found this list I was wondering if........". After all we`ve had other `newbie` questions recently. Also like you, when I first joined fandom I had questions that were answered by tolerant `oldies`. Even now [to quote your own words] "I do NOT know all the writers, episode titles (I know the titles, but not always in the right order), costumes, and other amazing trivia that many other fans know." > As to your love for talking and sharing B7, it must only be with those you consider your fannish >equals. WHAT???!!! those boring old fogeys?! stuck in their ways they are, give me new blood any time. New slants, new perspections, new discussions. Besides my *fannish equals* get bored now when I recite the story of how Paul Darrow stripped to his underwear in front of me in his dressing room the first time I met him!!!!!!!! 8-) Bye for now Jackie PS > As to your love for talking and sharing B7, it must only be with those you consider your fannish >equals. Actually, when I first read that sentence I was deeply hurt, then absolutely horrified to realise that someone could think that from what I had written. PPS > As to your love for talking and sharing B7, it must only be with those you consider your fannish >equals. Yes, those with equal ENTHUSIASM. Why would I go on and on about Blakes 7 to those who are not interested. I would be a bore then don`t you think? Christopher Wheatley considers me a bore..... In fact I think I WILL reply to his last letter, which I forwarded to the list (I was going to be diplomatic and ignore it). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Apr 1998 20:20:13 -0500 From: Lisa Williams To: blakes7@lysator.liu.se Subject: Re: [B7L] re Got me angry. Just possibly because one of the most interesting points about an older show which has attained cult status is its staying power -- the fact that it still has a large and devoted following, after this much time and in spite of the flaws you listed. If that's the point of the exercise, then it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense to be studying the latest fad show, now would it? Who knows whether anyone will remember it, let alone still watch it, in 20 years? I know someone who's doing her PhD dissertation on Man From U.N.C.L.E. fandom, and that's older than B7. It's not an unheard-of idea. And yes, she's talked to everyone she can contact who was instrumental in producing the show, as well as gathering information from the fans. - Lisa _____________________________________________________________ Lisa Williams: lcw@dallas.net or lwilliams@ti.com Lisa's Video Frame Capture Library: http://lcw.simplenet.com/ New Riders of the Golden Age: http://www.warhorse.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Apr 1998 02:49:23 EDT From: ShelaB7 To: blakes7@lysator.liu.se Subject: [B7L] Another Favor Message-ID: Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Thank you to all who were kind enough to forward the Guards!
