If anyone is interested in ordering copies of the photos with Gareth in, please let me know which ones you want, but don't send any money until I've worked out postage costs etc. The cost is quoted as 4 pounds for a B+W 10x8 and 5 pounds for a colour 10x8. (But I'm checking as to whether I have to add VAT to that as I got caught that way once ordering photos from another source.) I've also been asked for copies of the photo on my web site of Gareth opening the new gallery. For simplicity, that costs the same price for the same size as the Twelth Night photos. These are the photos that I picked out from the contact sheet as most likely to be of interest: colour sheet 1C - 2 Sir Toby Belch and fellow conspiritors hiding behind a clothes rail. sheet 2C - 11 sir Toby miming a fist fight, 10 Sir Toby reading a letter (to Malvolio), 9 close up of him reading letter (letter can't actually be seen), 8 handing back the letter. black and white sheet 1 - 9 'Hold thy peace' - a visual Shakesperean pun in which the word peace is taken as 'piece' and they all decide to hold one another's... I remember this well from the play . sheet 2 - 13 Sir Toby with Maria sitting on his knee, 15 a close up of the head, 9 Sir Toby sitting on the floor drinking red wine out of a bottle. (it was ribena actually - Gareth said he got through 2 pints of it during the play!) sheet 4 - 23 close up of Sir Toby with Andrew Aguecheek, 34 conspiritors behind the clothes rail looking at Malvolio, 30 close up of the people behind the clothes rail. sheet 6 - Sir Toby holding Sebastian back from a fight. for what it's worth, my personal favourites (viewing the photos at a 1 inch size...) are the colour ones of him reading the letter, the B+W clothes rail close up, The one of toby drinking on the floor and the closeup head shot. I think most of them will look pretty good at 8x10 though. I eliminated a lot of photos that were only middling or poor. Please send any replies directly to me as I'm still off-list due to neck/shoulder pain. After due consideration of statements such as > Gan a much better comforter, being built like a nice big pillow. > gentle giants are more interesting than faux-otherworldy earth-mothers. the Gan Defence League has decided that the application is justified. It was a close call as you don't get oak leaves for knocking the opposition, only for promoting the excellent qualities of a sadly underestimated gentle and loyal man, but the recognition of Gan's cuddly qualities and his solid humanity just made the grade. for newcommers to the list, I should explain that the Gan Defence League awards oak leaves (symbolising the strength and virtuous qualities of our hero) to those who stand up and say positive things about Gan in public and acorns are awarded to those writing adult stories where Gan actually gets the girl (or bloke as the case may be). I'd list prominent holders of the awards, but I'm bound to forget someone. Let's just say that Kathy Moran is probably the holder of the most oak leaves and Steve R. does pretty well for acorns. Hmm. While I can't argue the male fantasy thing, I can poke the latter a bit: namely, action-oriented, tough, violent responses to a situation aren't the sole perogative of the male. It's only seen that way because it's usually portrayed that way. > Authentic male responses to dangerous situations seem to be confined to > 'serious' action dramas, such as realistic war films (Platoon, The Thin Red > Line, etc). Within the context of the primarily escapist, the machismo > myth still rules. Not least of which is because it's a damn sight easier to write. There are countless stories out there that berate the villain for his/her/its violent tendencies, but is still resolved by having the protagonist thump the bejaysus out of it/her/him. It happens to be hard to produce stories where the protagonist eschews violence, and still manages to find a convincing solution. I'm writing now to see how many people are seriously interested in this - I've got into a slightly awkward situation where I'm supposed to be in Nottingham during the day, but I'd be willing to come back if I knew I was going to see some fellow-fans!
