Avon at home: It is the only time in the series that we see a relaxed Avon in a family setting, the Mellanby home. He had said that a little boredom wouldn't go amiss, after all the excitement; and his wish has been granted. One of the nice benefits of his relaxation is that he looks good in that shirt. 2. The Mellanby family: While we saw the Varons' home in 'The Way Back', and the Ushton Blakes' in 'Hostage', there was no sense of a family home, presumably because the two were only glimpsed. This time, however, we see the Mellanby home in some detail, giving us the impression that it has been a place that has been lived in for some time. Of course, it does look more than a little like a sci-fi version of John Shaft's pad; and this is added to by Hal Mellanby's appearance, with his funky gold medallion. Some years ago, when we were watching the episode on tape, my brother's reaction to Hal's appearance was "Cool dude!" 3. Servalan: She lives up to her evil, impressive self. Despite being stranded on an unknown planet, she looks quite cool and calm, trying to contact her fleet. Of course, she is remarkably lucky to meet Avon and the Mellanbys, exploiting this luck to the full, by killing Hal and taking Orac, after trying to win over Avon. 4. Avon and Servalan: The scene where she tries to win over Avon is one of the best in the series, as things sizzle between them. From the good acting by Paul and Jackie, an excellent impression is given of how Avon was sorely tempted by Servalan. The ending, where he throws her away with the comment about being dead in a week, was wonderful. I've seen a few preview tapes, it does get better... Paul Darrow comes into it tonight, he plays Seedy man (CD man). He is very good, and wears a very unflatering brown velour shirt and a very bad (on purpose) wig. Paul can't help dropping into Avon from time to time, watch out for his line "It's the Law" VERY AVON... The series was filmed in two 5 episode blocks, Rob Grant thought CD man and Rats (CD man's younger side-kick) were so funny that he wrote them into more episodes of the second filming block I thought the first double episode was quite funny, and the effects were very impressive (again watch out for a scene when the severed head is put into a plant pot, grows parsnip legs, and runs off). If you like Red Dwarf (seasons 1-5), then you'll probably like this. However nice that sounds, considering that there's still two B7 web rings, I don't think that's very *likely* do you? At the moment there are 20 sites on one ring, and 28 sites on the other. Do you really think that either bunch will be willing to move? We could, of course, consider the onelist list to be the hangout of newbies who need spoiler protection. Last Friday at the BBC the Schedulers made the decision to cancel all the planned repeats of Doctor Who. This could effect the Blake's 7 as well. The Doctor Who repeats were launched with a fanfare, it had it's own BBC2 Saturday evening (with many newly commissioned documentaries), a Radio Times cover, many (very well produced) TV adds and several pages on the BBC website devoted to it. Hopes were high that the repeats would do very well, ratings wise, and it would be around on TV for a few years to come. Well, in the end it got 2 million views (exactly the same as the much hyped Gormangast), that's not bad, but the schedulers got cold feet, immediately dropped the Pertwee era, and went straight for one of the best, and one of the most repeated DW stories "Genesis of the Daleks" (9 times on the BBC network alone). This did not help the ratings, maybe because people had seen it recently, or have the video and didn't bother to watch. So after the current story ends, that's it for Doctor Who. I spoke to the people at the BBC who do care , the team who do the restoration on DW, and push DW as much as they can (alas no B7 fan in that group), they have restored the next 2 stories ready for transmission at a cost of many thousands of pounds, now that's all going to be wasted (unless they bring it out on DVD or video). However, Blake's 7 does have a few things over Doctor Who. There was no Boardroom level decision deep in the heart of the BBC to repeat the show, the truth is, now with the new deal with Equity it's cheap to repeat the programme, it has no more significance to the schedulers than The Good Life, Bread or To the Manor Born, it's just another old repeat. That said, this means there's no big expectations for B7, so it may continue. Although the DW restoration team only give it six weeks... So, to be honest, it's up to all of us! Even if you have bought every single version of the videos and watch then every day, WE MUST WATCH THE TRANSMITTED VERSION ON BBC2. Ring up the BBC and tell them how much you, your family and friends are enjoying the repeats, also ring again, and complain, if the show is moved around in the schedules or posponed ect. Always be polite and do not dictate your demands for the show to the poor girl on duty that day. I was at the BBC last week and was talking to a friend who is now a Production Manager, he said that that Producers and Schedulers take great interest in the calls taken by the Duty Officer. Another thing, if when you ring, you give them your name and address and ask for a reply, the people concerned are duty bound to reply to you. You may get a standard "Thank for your inquiry" type of letter, but it will at least show them that there is enough interest to keep the show on and at a regular time. So, this is to everyone. Don't just sit on your arse and wait for someone else to call, pick up the phone and do it yourself... BBC Information Line 08700 100 222, and ask to speak to the Duty Officer. It would be dreadful if after all this time Blake's 7 goes the same way as Doctor Who just because we don't bother to watch. Remember if it's taken off, it will never come back again (in any form) on the BBC.
